How to close interviews the right way
You’ve had a super-productive, fun interview and your candidate seems to be (fingers crossed) ideal. Congrats!
But what happens next?
Before walking candidates out there are a few things you need to get right, so you both walk away feeling awesome.Â
Closing interview questions will help you clarify outstanding issues (like pay), check if the candidate gets the job reqs and figure out whether they’re really interested or not.Â
Top tip: Remember to leave time for candidates to ask their own questions. Then thank them and update them on next steps.
Closing interview questions
- Do you have any questions for us?
- Does this all add up?Â
- Do you think you’d be an awesome fit for the role?
- How much notice do you need to give your current employer?
- What do you expect re salary?
- Would you re-apply for this role now you know more about it?
- Based on today, if you were hired what would be your ‘elevator pitch’ for your new role?
- Are you still interested in this role?
Ace your closing interview questions
- Be clear: Choose specific questions to help clarify what the candidate really wants and let them offer a closing statement. Keep in mind your company culture when they respond.Â
- End on a high: A great candidate experience = positivity and clarity. Don’t ask challenging questions last, simply focus on responsibilities and logistics.
- Listen: Whether they’re a fit or not, let them share their own thoughts before they leave. Offer them an opportunity to ask questions or offer ideas.Â
Candidates to avoid
- They rush: If you sense your candidate is bored or keen for the interview to end and doesn’t ask any questions of their own, they might not want the job.
- Dealbreakers: Check back in on their answers to the potential deal breakers you asked in the application form or during screening. After the interview, they might change their needs so it’s worth checking in to see if you still match.
- Inconsistency: Candidates generally go from nervous to comfortable during interviews, but if you notice anything else like arrogance or boredom, it’s not going to be a great fit.
